Metal-free Ceramic Crowns
Porcelain is a particular type of ceramic that is built by stacking and firing. Metal free / all ceramic crowns are the best and cosmetically acceptable crowns available today. They resemble healthy natural teeth in every way… to such an extent that a perfectly fabricated crown cannot be identified even by a dentist, during examination! In case of PFM (porcelain fused to metal) crowns, there is an opaque material applied over the metal to mask its metallic colour. The metal along with the opaque layer prevents the crown from being translucent. Metal free/ all ceramic crowns offer the unique advantage of being translucent… they mimic the translucency of natural teeth.
Choices in all-porcelain and all-ceramic crowns:
There are various types of material used for all-porcelain or all-ceramic crowns: Empress, Procera, Lava, Zirconia, Cerecon Inceram etc. are all various types of metal free ceramic crowns and there is difference in the materials used. Several factors are considered in the selection of the crown material: strength requirements, esthetic requirements, the abrasivity of the material against the opposing teeth, and the skills of the dentist.
