Yoga for Glowing Skin

Regular exercise is one of the most important tenets of a good, healthy life. Yoga offers the benefits of physical as well as mental rejuvenation, and depending on the type of yoga you practice, you might be burning calories, toning your body and relaxing your mind. But did you know that Yoga also offers benefits for your skin?

How does yoga benefit your skin?
Certain yoga exercises have proven skin benefits. Yoga helps in improving your body’s detoxification  by flushing all the organs. It also increases respiration, lubricates your joints, strengthens your muscles and has been shown to improve your overall immunity.

Yoga causes vasodilation (enlargement of the blood vessels), which leads to increased blood flow to he skin, providing it with more oxygen and nutrients. This leads to the healthy glow you notice after a good yoga session! Breathing exercises in yoga help to balance your hormones, and reduce the cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is one of the main culprits behind acne breakouts.

Yoga also increases skin’s elasticity, helping prevent wrinkles. So regular yoga practice, in combination with a healthy diet, will not only help you prevent acne and breakouts, but help you get a lovely, glowing complexion!

Yoga asanas for bright and healthy skin.

While we won’t claim to be Yoga experts, here are some yoga asanas we recommend to especially
help your skin.

1. Bhujangasana – Cobra pose

This pose helps reduce tension, stress and fatigue by opening your lungs and energizing your body.
The improved breathing helps your organs with proper amounts of oxygen.

2. Tadasana – Mountain pose

A deep breathing exercise, this simple standing pose improves oxygen flow, and helps reduce stress.
This pose also helps improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, leading to a brighter complexion and reduced puffiness around your eyes.

3. Matsyasana – Fish pose

This pose gently stretches the throat muscles, which helps flush your thyroid and parathyroid glands, thereby keeping hormones balanced, and hormone-related skin concerns like acne in check. It also relaxes your muscles, and makes the skin more flexible and firmer.

4. Trikonasana – Triangle pose

This pose stretches your whole body, and helps improve digestion. It also increases the flow of blood to your face and head.

5. Uttanasana – Standing Forward Fold

Exercises which make you invert your body, like this pose, help bring blood flow to the face and increase oxygen supply to skin cells. Providing your body with this bit of ‘anti-gravity’ can have anti- aging effects, and give your skin a health glow!

So, if you practice Yoga, consider including these poses in your rotation. And if you haven’t started Yoga yet, we strongly recommend you consider trying it out. Taking some time for self-care is the best thing you can do for your mind, body and soul.
